Apple is creating software and support for their mixed reality headset, says Bloomberg.

Apple is making waves in the virtual reality world with its upcoming release of a mixed-reality headset. Bloomberg reports that the tech giant is preparing a wide range of first-party apps for the headset, including gaming, fitness, video, and collaboration tools. Mark Gurman, a reliable source for all things Apple, has revealed a long list of apps and features that are rumored to be coming to the headset, giving us a glimpse into what we can expect.

Apple's WWDC conference this June is the much-anticipated platform where the tech giant will unveil their mixed reality headset, and recent reports suggest that they are also preparing a long list of first-party apps for the device. According to Bloomberg, users can expect a variety of first-party content including gaming, fitness, video, and collaboration tools, which will be available on Apple's mixed-reality headset. The report lists a number of iPad apps that have been adapted for mixed reality, such as Calendars, Contacts, Files, and Home control, among others.

The report also mentions that Apple's conferencing service, FaceTime, will generate 3D versions of users in virtual meeting rooms. A freeform collaboration app will enable users to work on virtual whiteboards together while in mixed reality, and Pages word processing, Numbers spreadsheet, and Keynote slide deck apps will be available for work purposes. Apple TV will feature both immersive sports content and traditional video content presented in virtual environments, such as a desert or the sky. Users will be able to read with Apple Books in virtual reality and exercise with Fitness+.

Multitasking and Siri will also be available on the mixed-reality headset, allowing users to run multiple apps at the same time, floating within the mixed-reality space. The Camera app will also allow users to take pictures from the headset. If these reports are accurate, Apple may be releasing the most feature-rich headset in the market, with a mature and battle-tested ecosystem of apps.

It's also said that gaming will be a major focus, which is a reversal from previous reports. This could mean we'll see a wider push for Apple to court third-party developers soon after release, which is said to be a few months after its June unveiling, priced at around $3,000. The hardware will feature a dial crown similar to the one seen on Apple Watch, which will allow the wearer to seamlessly switch between virtual and augmented reality views. Apple has not confirmed any of these reports, and we'll have to wait for the June 5th keynote to see if these rumors come to fruition.

Meta's Horizon Worlds is now available to users aged 13 and above

 If you're a fan of VR, you're probably familiar with Meta's social VR platform, Horizon Worlds. Until recently, the platform was only open to users aged 18 and above. But that's about to change. Meta has announced that Horizon Worlds will soon be available to teens aged 13 to 17 in the US and Canada. The company says it's expanding its policy to include younger users in the coming weeks, effectively opening up its first-party social platform to its entire user base in those countries.

To prepare for the wave of younger users, the company is also releasing some age-appropriate protections and safety defaults. Safety features will include the ability for teens to control who they follow and who can follow them back. Profiles will also be set to private by default, obscuring active status and location. Worlds and events will have content ratings, so younger teens can't get in. A new voice mode feature is also rolling out to everyone, which garbles the voices of both unknown people and teen's voices by default. Raising your hand to your ear temporarily lets you hear other users when voice mode is switched on.

According to a memo seen by The Wall Street Journal, Horizon Worlds' weekly retention rate was 11% in January 2023, which the company aimed to increase to 20%. The goal outlined in the memo maintained that Worlds needed to reach 500,000 monthly active users (MAU) in the first half of 2023, ultimately reaching the one million mark by year's end. At the time, it was reported the platform was hovering around 200,000 MAUs, or just below the December peak.

Meta is also planning to release the flatscreen version of Horizon Worlds, opening the Quest-only social platform to web and mobile devices soon. Valve's interview confirms VR project coming soon

According to Coomer, Valve has a lot of expertise in VR devices and believes in the medium and VR games. The company hopes to remain open on PC platforms rather than having VR games exclusively on a certain platform. While adhering to this belief, Valve is continuing development on VR headsets, although they cannot confirm the existence of specific products or disclose the release date of their results.

This news follows Valve chief Gabe Newell's remarks last year that its handheld gaming PC platform, Steam Deck, is a stepping stone to standalone VR hardware. While Valve is notoriously tight-lipped about its in-development projects, hearing directly from Coomer, who has worked on major games up to Half-Life: Alyx, is exciting news for VR enthusiasts. Get ready, because Pimax Portal is finally hitting the shelves this month! Pimax, a Shanghai-based company known for its wide field-of-view (FOV) PC VR headsets, has announced that its hybrid VR headset, Portal, is almost ready for launch. Portal is based on a Nintendo Switch-style console and is set to offer both 6DOF head and controller tracking for VR gameplay, in addition to acting as both a handheld console and living room entertainment hub.

Portal works as both a Nintendo Switch-style handheld (running Android) and a Samsung Gear VR-style headset. The device is being couched as a jack of all trades, with its Kickstarter campaign attracting over $350,000 from backers in 2022. Pimax has now finalized Portal's hardware, with mass production set to start. However, Pimax is currently optimizing the software for Portal, with heat dissipation, power consumption, and controller connection marked as areas in need of improvement.

By the end of May, Pimax will have "more than 20 VR games" available for the Portal VR mode. Furthermore, the QLED version of the Portal will support native PC VR via HDMI, while other versions will support streaming PC VR content via WiFi e6 and USB-C. This comes on the heels of the news last month that Pimax had secured a $30 million series C1 financing round, something the company says will aid in the rollout of both Portal and Crystal headsets.

With its wide FOV optics and high-resolution displays, Pimax is one of the few companies to offer such devices directly to consumers. This technology aims to revolutionize computer-vision-based object segmentation, which is the ability for computers to understand the difference between individual objects in an image or video. Object segmentation is the process of identifying and separating objects in an image or video. The future is here, and it's full of innovative technological solutions such as RizzGPT. Developed by a group of student researchers from Stanford University, RizzGPT is the real-time Charisma as a Service (CaaS) that combines augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI) technology to generate natural responses in real time.

The RizzGPT device is a pair of glasses that listens to your conversations using OpenAI's automatic speech recognition tool, Whisper. The device then generates responses using OpenAI's ChatGPT-4 chatbot software. These responses are layered over the user's real-world environment using Brilliant Labs' Brilliant Monocle, a hackable AR lens that can be clipped onto any pair of consumer glasses.

The result is a communication assistance device that can deliver knowledge on virtually any topic up until 2021 at a moment's notice. It's like having a knowledgeable friend in your ear at all times. As Bryan Hau-Ping Chiang, one of the members of the student research team, pointed out, the system could prove useful in a number of high-stress scenarios.

In the newest episode of Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth's podcast, John Carmack, a VR expert, and independent AI researcher shared his technical and strategic insights on virtual reality. Carmack had a decade-long run helping shape the direction of VR development at Oculus and advising executives at Facebook before formally leaving Meta in December to focus on developing Artificial General Intelligence. Smart contact lenses maker raises funds for Micro-LED Displays for XR

Smart contact lens maker, Mojo Vision, recently raised $22.4 million in a Series A investment round. The funds will be used to develop and commercialize micro-LED display technology for consumer, enterprise, and government applications. This comes after the company had to put its smart contact lenses on hold and downsize its workforce by 75%. Before this round, Mojo Vision had already amassed $205 million in outside investment, with its most recent in January 2022 bringing in $45 million.

Mojo Vision's new focus is on displays for AR/VR, automotive, light field, large format displays, and others that require high-performance micro-LED displays. The company is developing its own High-Performance Quantum Dot (HPQD) technology to make a "very small, very bright, very efficient RGB pixel". The company is boasting a number of advances in its proprietary technology, including dynamic displays with up to 28,000 ppi, efficient blue micro-LED devices at sub-μm scale, high-efficiency quantum dot ink for red and green, high brightness at 1M+ nits, and a display system that incorporates an optimized CMOS backplane, wafer-to-wafer bonding, and custom micro-lens optics.

Mojo Vision's prototype smart contacts made use of its own in-house displays, which at the time included a monochrome display capable of over 14,000 pixels per inch (ppi). Mojo Vision's new CEO, Dr. Nikhil Balram, is said to bring semiconductor and display technology expertise to the company.

Preventing wildfires with VR technology

Preventing wildfires is a crucial endeavor, and now there is a new tool in the fight against them: VR technology. Immersive technology is being used to train pilots thanks to companies like Intellic Technologies. This is just one example of how VR technology can be used to prevent and fight wildfires.

A new partnership between Becker Support Services and Anchor Flank & Pinch has formed a company called Intellic Technologies. This new venture is dedicated to providing various organizations with safe and efficient wildland fire training using immersive technology. They are using wildland fire simulation software and other training services to create a new way to train pilots.

The FS3D virtual wildland training hardware and software is a crucial part of this technology. It provides pilots with hyper-realistic training scenarios featuring VR and mixed reality technology, photo-realistic imagery, and scientific fire growth modeling. According to Intellic Technologies, the FS3D wildland fire training simulator is designed for aerial and ground support companies, government agencies, and U.S. ally wildfire organizations.

Thanks to these developments in VR technology, we may be able to prevent more wildfires in the future. By providing pilots with realistic training scenarios, they will be better equipped to handle challenging fire situations. This new technology from Intellic Technologies may be a game-changer in the fight against wildfires.

The new 3D display from Sony doesn't need AR/VR gear

Sony's latest addition to its Spatial Reality Display lineup, the ELF-SR2, is set to launch next month. The 27-inch 4K display promises an immersive 3D experience without the need for additional hardware like augmented reality glasses or a virtual reality headset. The device features an improved vision sensor and several image quality-enhancing technologies, making it suitable for use by architects, engineers, and software or game developers, among others.

What's more, the ELF-SR2 comes with facial tracking technology and a wide viewing angle to ensure consistent 3D content viewing from different vantage points. It is compatible with Unity and Unreal Engine SDKs and supports development using Open GL and DirectX11/12, with OpenXR support coming later this year.

To explore compatible applications and relevant use cases and studies, Sony has launched the new Spatial Reality Display App Select website. Users can also easily display their 3D projects using the Spatial Reality Display Player app.

The device is designed to be easily transportable and is compatible with several PCs. It retails for $5,000 and is available in the United States and Canada from May. Interested individuals can check it out in person at the upcoming NAB Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, or the Augmented World Expo (AWE) in Santa Clara, California, from May 31 to June 2. With this new device, Sony is taking a step forward in delivering an immersive and convenient 3D experience.

One exciting development comes in the form of the Seamless Walk system, which could potentially revolutionize the way we move in VR. This experimental foot-based movement system eliminates the need for additional wearables and body-tracking camera technologies, instead utilizing pressure sensors and machine learning technology embedded in an intelligent carpet. Armed only with his photo and island coordinates to work with, Norah sets off on an “otherworldly tale of mystery and love.”

Initially launched for PC, Xbox, and PlayStation, Call of the Sea was first released in 2020. It was well-received by critics and players alike, earning a BAFTA nomination for Debut Game in 2021, and winning Best Immersive Game at the 2022 Raindance Immersive Awards. The VR adaptation of the game doesn’t appear to deviate much from the original flatscreen release, beyond expected additions like motion controls and 360-degree immersive environments. Once the installation is complete, you can launch SteamVR from the installation folder, and select “Launch in Desktop” mode so that you can see a mouse pointer within the game window. After that, you're ready to start streaming VR games on Discord!

Now that SteamVR has been installed, it’s time to launch it. To do so, double-click on the “SteamVR” icon on your desktop screen to launch it. You will then be taken to the launch window of SteamVR.

To launch SteamVR, double-click the icon from your desktop screen to open the launch window. From here, select “Launch in Desktop” mode so you can see a mouse pointer within the game window. 

Once SteamVR is launched, you are ready to set up your virtual reality environment for streaming on Discord.

Now that SteamVR is launched, it’s time to connect your headset. To do this, plug your compatible headset into the USB port of your PC. 

Once the connection is established, SteamVR will detect the device and you will be able to start playing VR games with friends.

Step 2: Open Discord Application

Now that SteamVR and your game are running, it's time to open the Discord application. Open the “Startup” menu and search for the “Discord” application. 

The icon you're looking for is a stylized gaming controller image with a blue color. Once you find it, click on the icon to open the Discord window.

Once Discord is opened, you'll be taken to a virtual chat room you created or joined. Connect to a Voice Channel. To do so, click on the “Voice Channels” button located on the left side of the screen. From here, you can select any of the available channels and join them. 

Once you’ve joined a channel, you can start streaming your VR game.

Step 3: Select Server and Go Live

To get started, select the server you want to stream on from the navigation panel on the left side of your Discord window. Then, click on the game name at the navigation bar above the username. 

Discord can natively detect a game you are currently playing and it will appear here. From there, select the “Stream” icon beside the game name.

If you're using Virtual Desktop, make sure to configure the video resolution and frame rate according to what you need and then hit “Start Stream”. Once everything is set up properly, a monitor-like icon will appear next to your username in the chat room indicating that you are now live and ready for everyone to join in! 

As soon as everyone is connected, simply open up your SteamVR game and start playing - it's that easy!

Adjust the “STREAMING QUALITY”, “RESOLUTION”, and “FRAME RATE” according to what you need before hitting “Start Stream”. You're now ready to share your VR experience with everyone on the server! Enjoy!
